VIVIPAROUS CRASSULACEAE

Among the Crassulaceae, the genus Bryophyllum is best known for many of its species having the ability to produce plantlets on their leaves. Although this ability is unique to Bryophyllum, only a few species in the genus and their hybrids have the ability to do so. It is not found among all the species of Bryophyllum. Some species of Bryophyllum produce plantlets on the floral stems instead.

Famous authors in the succulent literature, like W. Rauh, H. Jacobsen and R. Hamet, etc., have merged the genus Bryophyllum into Kalanchoe. Recently, botanists have decided to resurrect Bryophyllum. One characteristic of Bryophyllum are the pendulous flowers. Kalanchoe has erect flowers and does not produce plantlets under normal circumstances

This document lists the species of Bryophyllum aswell as the old names for Kalanchoe if available. Also see: Common Names

The ability to produce plantlets in other ways can be found in certain species in other genera in the family. A few species of Kalanchoe also have the ability to produce plantlets.

Plantlets, also known as bulbils or gemmae, can occur as adventitious means of propagation on a variety of different plant parts. This phenomenon is also known as vegetative apomixis.

Sometimes they appear underground (subterranean) and are bulb-like resting buds for the plants during the dry season or winter resting season.

Sometimes axillary floral stems are modified to produce a single terminal rosette instead a floral cluster, analogous to the runners of a strawberry plant. This occurs particularly in Kalanchoe synsepala and certain species in the Echeverioideae.
